Summer School Tour

After running the 1st International Summer School on Network and Service Management (ISSNSM 2007) at Jacobs University, I went to the University of Twente to attend the EUNICE 2007 summer school. I liked both events and I think they did nicely complement each other. I can only recommend that PhD students attend such events; they are a nice place to establish contacts, to share insights and learn, and to share experiences (the good and the bad) with fellow PhD students. Given the positive feedback about these events, I assume that both continue next year; so watch out for the call for papers and participation.

EMANICS and AIMS in Oslo

The EMANICS project sponsored AIMS 2007 (Autonomous Infrastructure, Management and Security) conference is currently taking place in Oslo and I enjoy its interactive nature. Oslo is a great city to travel to during the summer and I particularly liked the bus trip from the Oslo Torp airport along a very beautiful scenery.

Panels and Trace Analysis at IM 2007

I am participating in the 10th IFIP/IEEE Symposium on Integrated Management (IM 2007) in Munich presenting a paper on our network management trace analysis work. I am involved as well as the panel chair and it is nice to see the five panels actually taking place now.

Summer School on Network and Service Management

The 1st International Summer School on Network and Service Management is taking place at Jacobs University on July 9-13, 2007. This event primarily targets PhD. students working in the area of network and service management and combines class room lectures with hands on lab sessions. The courses and lab sessions are organized by well-known instructors who are technology experts, open source developers, and familiar with operational networks. The event is sponsored by EMANICS. Make sure to register early as the number of participants is limited.

Dagstuhl Seminar Autonomic Management of Networks and Services

I am organizing a Dagstuhl seminar on “Autonomic Management of Networks and Services” together with Marcus Brunner (NEC C&C Research, Germany), Raouf Boutaba (University of Waterloo, Canada), and Rolf Stadler (KTH, Sweden). This seminar runs back-to-back with another Dagstuhl seminar of a similar topic: “Resilient and Survivable Networks, Infrastructures and Services”. I have never been in Dagstuhl before, but so far I only heard very positive reports about Dagstuhl events…

EMANICS Project Review

Today, I returned from the first review of the EMANICS project from Brussels. The review was pretty positive; the project will basically continue as planned. Now it is getting time to focus resources on other equally important things, such as the FP7 program…

Power of Networking (towards a Green Internet)

I have been attending the European Future Networking Initiatives Workshop organized by Terena in Amsterdam and there were interesting statements made concerning the power consumption of Internet systems. There were reports that central backbone routing spots consume energy in the order of Megawatts and it is also known that Google started to place their server farms at places where energy is cheap, and this, of course, impacts the Internet topology. We may have to think about the energy aspect of networks in the future much more than we have done in the past and perhaps it is getting time to work towards a Green Internet.
