Power of Networking (towards a Green Internet)

I have been attending the European Future Networking Initiatives Workshop organized by Terena in Amsterdam and there were interesting statements made concerning the power consumption of Internet systems. There were reports that central backbone routing spots consume energy in the order of Megawatts and it is also known that Google started to place their server farms at places where energy is cheap, and this, of course, impacts the Internet topology. We may have to think about the energy aspect of networks in the future much more than we have done in the past and perhaps it is getting time to work towards a Green Internet.
